The International Esports Federation or IESF is the world governing body that was formed to promote the sport worldwide in order for Esports to gain recognition as a true sport, and through the process break language, race and cultural barriers for those taking part or simply as spectators. Esports are also known as electronic sports, e-sports or eSports and is essentially a form of competition using video games. Prior to the late 2000s video games were mostly played by amateurs, but since then professional gamers and spectators joined the scene through live streaming. This meant the popularity grew and the sport is currently experiencing an explosive growth internationally with sponsors lining up to be part of the major championships. There are also big sums in prize money for winners. Most of these events feature in arenas drawing large crowds. Some of these major events include the Esports World Championships, the League of Legends World Championship, The International, Evolution Championship Series, the Overwatch League and Fortnite.
The sport has gained such a growth that the International Olympic Committee is exploring adding it to future Olympic events. Currently it is estimated that revenues will exceed $1 billion per year and that audiences will grow to over 450 million viewers. This is further aided by online streaming media platforms like YouTube and Twitch. For the International Esports Federation the Esports World Championships is the main and most important competition the federation oversees each year. Starting with only nine member nations, there are now over fifty. Apart from hosting international esports tournaments, another key task for IESF is expanding the range of member nations in turn leading to further awareness of the sport worldwide. Establishing standards for competitions, referees and players is another major role for the federation. In addition, the sport fully complies with the rules and regulations of the World Anti-Doping Agency. IESF has their headquarters based in Busan, South Korea.
