The week in review

16th to 22nd November

Hello and welcome again as we delve into selected results and review what lies ahead for us over the next week. Primož Roglič, the Slovenian rider who so narrowly lost out to fellow-countryman Tadej Pogačar at the Tour de France, claimed top honours at La Vuelta ciclista a España last Sunday. The race also concluded the UCI WorldTour and Women's WorldTour for 2020. Lisa Brennauer of Germany successfully defended her title of the Ceratizit Challenge by la Vuelta, the shorter women's race that forms part of the tour. In rugby union and part of the Tri-Nations currently being played in Australia between the hosts, Argentina and New Zealand, it was Argentina who stunned New Zealand earlier today (or evening in Sydney) with a 25-15 victory. This was their first ever win over the All Blacks. The Nations Cup also started last night with Ireland completing a comprehensive win over Wales. The men's ITTF Table Tennis World Cup is currently underway in Zhengzhou, China. On Tuesday Chen Meng of China was crowned the women's champion that was played in Weihai, China.

We often refer to Antalya, the coastal tourist city in Turkey that hosts so many sports events each year. Last week two draughts world championships were completed there. Rapid was won by Yuri Anikeev of Ukraine and Aygul Idrisova of Russia, while blitz was won by Ainur Shaibakov and Alia Aminova (both of Russia). Joan Mir of Spain extended his lead at the FIM MotoGP World Championship with only two more rounds to go. This weekend we are at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Spain before the final round in Portugal next Sunday. One of the big ATP tennis tournaments starts tomorrow in London. The ATP Finals brings together the best men's players with the final next Sunday. We also look forward to the next two days of The Masters. After the first day, there is currently a four-way lead. As the summer sport seasons are coming to a close, the winter season begins with Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Cup events at Sigulda in Latvia over the next weekend.

Until next time, have a great sporting week!
