11th to 17th April
We will once again begin with the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup and a review of last Sunday's final between Australia and England. The match correctly reflected the two best teams of the competition, with the addition that one of these stood head and shoulders above everyone else. Australia did not disappoint their supporters and confidently carried the favourites tag to beat England by 71 runs and lift the prized trophy for the seventh time. Neither did they lose a match during the entire tournament. Moving onto World Athletics and the first event of the inaugural Race Walking Tour. Brazil's Caio Bonfim and Mexico's Valeria Ortuno took top honours at the Podebrady Walking meeting in the Czech Republic. Kenya's Judith Korir Jeptum produced the first women’s sub-2:20 marathon on French roads when winning at the Marathon de Paris, while Ethiopia's Haftu Teklu broke the course record at Marató Barcelona.
Poland's Wojciech Szewczyk came out on top at the recent Pool World 10-Ball Championships featured in Las Vegas. In the race to 10, Szewczyk was 9-7 down at one stage. In tennis and remaining with Polish stars, Iga Natalia Świątek officially became the newest WTA World No.1 after beating Japan's Naomi Osaka at the Miami Open Final. In the men's final, Spain's 18-year-old sensation Carlos Alcaraz overcame Norway's Casper Ruud to lift his first ATP Tour Trophy. With the bandy season affected with cancellations, we did have the FIB World Championship for boys year 19. It was a convincing win for favourites Sweden who overcame Norway 10-2 in the final. It is also the 15th gold for Sweden in the junior side for this age group.
Charleroi in Belgium is currently hosting the 4th FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving and the 2nd FAI European Indoor Skydiving Championship. Walter Tempelman of Discover the Games is at the event and provided the following photo.
The Netherland's Dick Jaspers recently made it three in-a-row at the Carom Billiards World Cup 3-Cushion in Las Vegas, cementing his position at the top of the world rankings. History beckoned in MotoGP when Spain's Aleix Espargaro converted his pole position to a win for the very first time in his career. It was also his 200th MotoGP start. In snooker Liam Davies became the youngest ever winner of a match in the World Championship by beating Aaron Hill 6-4 as the first qualifying round got underway in Sheffield. Further snooker news is that England's Rebecca Kenna has secured her place at the World Snooker Tour for the first time in her career after finishing fourth on the World Women's Snooker Tour rankings.
Sweden's Martin Haarahiltunen is the new FIM Ice Speedway World Champion after an afternoon of drama last Sunday at the Thialf Stadium in Heerenveen. Chess news is that Wesley So won the FIDE Grand Prix in Berlin beating Hikaru Nakamura, with the latter securing his place at the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2022. Germany's Matthias Bluebaum won the European Individual Championship. Three Ice Hockey World Championships completed yesterday. Japan won the Women's U18 Division I, Group A, Latvia won the Women's Division II, Group A, while the United Arab Emirates won the Men's Division III, Group A.
Until next time, have a great week in sport.
