Helping sport federations grow themselves, their athletes, and their membership

The Weekly Sports Review

20th to 26th December

Competitions between the United States and Europe or the Rest of the World feature in sports like golf and tennis. The Mosconi Cup is no exception where the best pool-billiard players from the USA pit their skills against the best of Europe. Last weekend Team Europe claimed a narrow 14-13 win at the Alexandra Palace in London to retain the trophy. The venue alternates every year with Las Vegas the preferred choice for 2022. Phuket has been the host for two junior Beach Volleyball World Championships. While the Under-21 tournament completes tomorrow, the Under-19's wrapped up their event with victories for France's men and USA's women. Thailand and Brazil take the remaining men's medals, while Russia and Ukraine complete the women's podium. Sweden are the undisputed champions of floorball at present as the men completed a 6-4 win over Finland in Helsinki at the postponed World Floorball Championship 2020. The final was a repeat of the women's event completed earlier in Uppsala where the hosts won in extra time.

USA's 22-year-old Stetson Wright is making a name for himself as he claimed two Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association World Championships for the second year in a row. Wright completed the all-around and saddle bronc riding titles in Las Vegas. At the same event, Kaycee Feild made history as the greatest bareback rider in PRCA history, while Tyler Waguespack collected his third steer wrestling world title. Sage Kimzey claimed his seventh bull riding mountain world title, Caleb Smidt collected his third tie-down roper world title, and Jordon Briggs snared barrel racing world and average titles. Team ropers Kabel Driggers and Junior Nogueira won their first roping header and roping healer world titles. Over to bobsleigh where Germany's Francesco Friedrich is becoming one of the biggest names in the sport by celebrating his 20th 4-man bobsleigh and 60th overall victory earlier in the week at Winterberg. In softball USA's Under-18 Women beat Chinese Taipei 1-0 to claim the World Cup in Lima. In carom billiards, the Netherland's Dick Jaspers was crowned World Champion in Sharm El Sheikh.

It does not matter who your preferred champion was, Formula One produced one of the best seasons for a while. With Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton tied on championship points going in to the final race, Abu Dhabi gave viewers more thrills than ever expected. It was Verstappen who eventually raised the prized trophy. Putting controversy of the race aside, the sport won many supporters who now look forward to 2022 as new and exciting drivers are coming though. In Dublin, Axel Vang Christensen and Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal (both of Norway) won the European Cross Country Championships. At the recent 2021 Wheelchair Basketball European Championship, it was gold for both the Netherland's women and men. Tashkent, Uzbekistan, recently completed the IWF Weightlifting World Championships and Commonwealth Championships. Several records were broken with four on the final day. One standout performance is Nigeria's Joy Ogbonne Eze completing her nation's first-ever gold medal. Finally, Russia's Nikolai Gulyaev and Tumaara Fedorova win the most recent Draughts World Cup in Julinek, Poland.

Until next time, Merry Christmas and have a great week in sport.
