The Weekly Sports Review

10th to 16th January

We are four weeks away from the Olympic Winter Games 2022 in Beijing. In the current environment, it is difficult to state with certainty that any event will be going ahead. All indications so far point to a green light for the winter showpiece sporting event with the opening ceremony on the 4th February and closing the 20th February. All winter sports have had relatively good starts to their seasons, apart from some cancelations of ski and snowboarding events. Ice Hockey and bandy have been the most affected with the cancelation and postponement of entire world championship events. The bobsleigh and skeleton seasons are approaching the Junior and Senior European Championships starting tomorrow in Altenberg and concluding later in the week in Winterberg. Norway's Johannes Høsflot Klæbo and Russia's Natalia Nepryaeva earlier in the week were crowned the Tour de Ski Overall Champions, the premier crown of the cross-country skiing season. Bischofshofen in Germany staged the final event of the 70th 4-Hills Ski Jumping tournament. Japan's Ryoyu Kobayahsi claimed the overall title.

The Dakar Rally has covered 6 stages so far with another week to go in the testing conditions of the Saudi Arabian desert. Here is a quick breakdown of the current leaders. (Bike - Daniel Sanders (AUS) / Original by Motul - Charan Moore (RSA) / Quad - Aleksander Maksimov (RUS) / Car - Orlando Terranova (ARG) & Daniel Oliveras Carreras (ESP) / Light Prototype - Seth Quintero (USA) & Dennis Zenz (GER) / SSV - Marek Goczal & Lukasz Laskawiec (both POL) / Truck - Andrey Karginov, Andrey Mokeev & Ivan Malkov (all RUS) / Open - Gerard Tramoni & Dominique Totain (both FRA) / Classic - Serge Mogno & Florent Drulhon (both FRA).

Last Monday it was Scotland's Peter Wright who became the Professional Darts Corporation World Champion for the second time in his career. Wright defeated England's Michael Smith 7-5 at the famous Alexandra Palace in London. Three big cricket tours are currently in progress. India are in South Africa and the hosts completed a first-ever win over the tourists in Johannesburg in the second test to save the series. The decider starts in Cape Town on Tuesday. Over to Australia where The Ashes have already been won by the hosts, and it was Usman Khawaja who etched his name in the record books with centuries in both innings of the fourth test in Sydney. He joins just five other Australian batters to score twin tons in a single Ashes Test. Earlier in the week Bangladesh completed a win in the first test of their tour of New Zealand. The Caribbean is the fitting location for the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup. This weekend until Wednesday feature a number of warm up matches before the hosts open the tournament against Australia in Providence on Friday.

Until next time, have a great week in sport.
