Helping sport federations grow themselves, their athletes, and their membership

The weekly sports review

28th June to 4th July

It took them six days with the last day the most exciting of them all, but finally New Zealand were crowned ICC World Test Championship winners after beating India by 8 wickets in Southampton, England. The inaugural competition was introduced by the International Cricket Council, which creates a world championship also for test cricket. It is a unique competition as qualification takes place over a period of four years and points awarded for home and away test series, determines who finishes as the top two teams on an ICC Test Ranking Table. For the final match to determine the champions, a reserve day is added making it six instead of the usual five days. Staying on the theme of World Championships, the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) had recently voted to grant full status to the FIA's (motor racing world governing body) cross-country rallying discipline. The famous Dakar Rally becomes the opening round of the 2022 FIA World Championship, launching a new era of cross-country rallying.

Scotland's Tom Stoltman became the first Scot to win the World's Stongest Man title held in Sacramento, California. Stoltman is 6ft 8in and weighs an incredible 180kg. Over to the Women's Tennis Association tour in Birmingham, England, where Tunisia's Ons Jabeur became the first Arab women to win a WTA title. The last week Nazaré in Portugal hosted a number of important Beach Soccer tournaments. England's Lionesses triumphed at the Women's Euro Beach Soccer League beating Spain 3-1 in the final. Over to Volleyball where USA came from a set down to beat Brazil in the final of the FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League in Rimini, Italy. The score was 26-28, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-21, which is also USA's third title in as many years. In golf Jon Rahm also came from behind to win the U.S. Open, the third Major of the year.

The British & Irish Lions tour is finally underway with a match against Japan in Edinburgh. The team then departs to South Africa to play their next match against the Emirate Lions in Johannesburg. The Tour de France started today; the biggest prize on the UCI WorldTour. We also have The Championship starting on Monday in Wimbledon. It is the third Grand Slam of the year where all eyes will be on Novak Djokovic in his quest to win all four Grand Slams in one year. Until next time, have a great week in sport.
