The Weekly Sports Review

17th to 23rd January

Yesterday one of the toughest races in motor sport completed in the hot desert conditions of Saudi Arabia. The Dakar Rally is over twelve stages and covers a total distance of 680 kilometres. It is a unique event with nine different overall classes, and further divisions within many of those classes. Often referred to as Dakar only and originally named Paris-Dakar, the first race was in 1979 from Paris to Dakar in Senegal. Paris to Cape Town featured in 1992. Other routes in Africa have also followed, like to Cairo in 2000. The race was cancelled in 2008 and from 2009 to 2019 it featured in South America. For the last three years the organisers have taken the Dakar to Saudi Arabia, which most likely appears to be the location of choice for the foreseeable future.

Here follows the full results of 2022: Bike Ranking and Rally GP - Sam Sunderland (GBR); Bike Rally and Ranking Rally 2 Junior - Mason Klein (USA); Bike Ranking Rally 2 Women - Mirjam Pol (NED); Bike Ranking Rally 2 Veteran - Mario Patrao (POR) / Original by Motul - Arunas Gelazninkas (LTU) / Quad Ranking and Rally 2 - Alexandre Giroud (FRA) / Car Ranking and Ranking FIA T1 4x4 - Nasser Al-Attiyah (QAT) and Matthieu Baumel (AND); Ranking FIA T1 4x2 - Jakub Przygonski (POL) and Timo Gottschalk (GER); Ranking FIA T1 Ultimate Prototype - Mattias Ekstrom and Emil Bergkvist (SWE); Ranking FAI T2 Petrol - Akira Miura (JPN) and Laurent Lichtleuchter (FRA); Ranking - Sebastian Eriksson (SWE) and Wouter Rosegaar (NED) / Light Prototype and Ranking FIA T3 - Francisco Lopez Contardo and Juan Pablo Latrach Vinagre (CHL) / SSV Ranking T4 - Austin Jones (USA) and Gustavo Gugelmin (BRA) / Truck - Dmitry Sotnikov, Ruslan Akhmadeev, and Ilgiz Akhmetzianov (RUS) / Open and Classic - Gerard Tramoni and Dominique Totain (FRA).

Last Sunday Felix Auger-Aliassime clnched the ATP Cup for Canada with a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Roberto Bautisto Agut of Spain to give his country a 2-0 win in the tennis showpiece in Sydney. On Monday the first Grand Slam of the year starts in Melbourne. Germany's Francesco Friedrich is arguably the biggest name in men's bobsleigh. Friedrich, an Olympic Champion, secured overall World Cup victory in the 4-man bobsleigh. This is ideal form as the Winter Olympics approaches in Berlin early in February. The IBU Biathlon World Cup tour is in Ruhpolding, Germany this weekend. Current table leaders are Norway's Marte Olsbu Roeiseland and France's Quentin Fillon Maillet. The Netherland's Kimberley Bos entered the history books as her nation's first overall skeleton winner at the World Cup final of the Olympic season. Bos has also been crowned the European Champion in St. Moritz. If Francesco Friedrich is famous in bobsleigh, then the men's skeleton equivalent is Latvia's Martin's Dukurs, who has now won his 11th overall World Cup and his 12th European Championship.

Yesterday South Africa completed a test series win over India in Cape Town. Apart from a drawn series in 2020/11, India have not managed to beat the hosts in an away test series since their first tour in 1992/93. UFC fans will be looking forward to the heavyweight clash next Sunday in Anaheim where current champion Francis Ngannou of Cameroon will be defending his title.

Until next time, have a great week in sport.
