The Weekly Sports Review

31st January to 6th February

Cameroon's Francis Ngannou is still the Ultimate Fight Club Heavyweight Champion. Last Sunday Anaheim hosted the title fight between Ngannou and his challenger Ciryl Gane. The stats show that Gane in many areas had the slight upper hand in the first two rounds, but the champion began to lead from rounds three to five. The decision was unanimous. The story of Francis Ngannou is an inspiration in itself. Leaving his home nation of Cameroon, he travelled across the Sahara desert to North Africa. Ngannou eventually made his way to Spain as an illegal immigrant. After making his way to France, he was noticed for his boxing skills while living in Paris. Joining a training group, opportunities opened to be signed by UFC and compete for the heavyweight title, which Ngannou now owns. A self-confessed dream to one day also compete in professional boxing, we may still see that goal achieved.

Ashleigh Barty is the Australian Open Singles' Champion after defeating USA's Danielle Collins 6-3 7-6. This was the first  time an Australian woman reached the final in Australia in 44 years, with Barty making light work of the first set, before having to dig deep to take the second set in a tie break. The women's juniors event came to a close with No.1 seed Petra Marcinko of Croatia claiming her first junior Grand Slam singles title. In the mixed doubles final, the crown went to France's Kristina Mladenovic and Croatia's Ivan Dodig. The Men's Doubles final will be all-Australian on Sunday. The Men's Singles' title between Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev also on Sunday sets Nadal up to make history and claim his 21st Grand Slam title and become the greatest major champion in history.

The Africa Cup of Nations is in the quarter final stage with matches to be played later today and on Sunday. Gambia play hosts Cameroon and Burkina Faso face Tunisia today, while tomorrow Egypt take on Morocco and Senegal play Equatorial Guinea. In the ICC Men's U19 World Cup being played in the West Indies, England, Afghanistan and Australia are through to the Super League semi-finals. India face Bangladesh today to determine who will face Australia on Wednesday. Russia's Lubov Chernykh and Anastasia Kurysheva are the 2-woman Bobsleigh Junior World Champions. In the 4-man Bobsleigh, it was Latvia's Davis Kaufmanis who lead his team to glory. Germany's Maureen Zimmer took the Monobob title, while Maximilian Illmann claimed the 2-man Bobsleigh. The Junior World Championships took place in Innsbruck.

In figure skating, Junhwan Cha made history by taking the first ISU Championship title and medal for a Korean male skater at the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Tallinn. Over to snooker where Hossein Vafaei also made history by becoming the first Iranian to win a ranking title at the World Snooker Tour Shoot Out in Leicester. The new season of the FIA Formula E World Championship started yesterday with Round 1 in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. It was a one-two for Mercedes as current champion Nyck de Vries (NED) claimed the season opener, Stoffel Vandoorn (BEL) was second, and Jake Dennis (GBR) completed the podium. Round 2 is currently in progress.

This week was see the start of the Beijing Winter Olympics, Rugby Europe and Six Nations in the men's competitions, and the Winter Triathlon Championships in Andorra. Until next time, have a great week in sport.
