The weekly sports review

12th to 18th July

Slovenia's Tadej Pogačar is the current holder of the yellow jersey at the Tour de France as riders go through today's stage 14, but the real hero of the week must be Britain's Mark Cavendish. At this year's Tour de France, Cavendish has already won four stages and the previous occasion a stage was won by him at the famous race, was in 2016. Yesterday the long-standing record of 34 stage Tour wins held by legendary rider Eddy Merckx, was equaled. The Tour only finishes next Sunday in Paris and we hope Cavendish grabs another stage win to take the overall record and make this one of the most memorable years for him. Last week FIBA staged a number of Basketball Olympic Qualifying tournaments and a shout must go out to Slovenia who booked their seat on the plane to Tokyo for their first Olympic appearance. Luka Doncic produced an incredible triple-double to defeat Lithuania in the final in Kaunas. Geneva also hosted the 27th FIG Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships. Historic gold medals were won by Israel's Men's Group, while Portugal's Rita Ferreira and Ana Teixiera claimed their nation's first gold of the event.

South Africa displayed their incredible depth at the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Lanzarote. Gold medals were comfortably claimed in both men's and women's races. We have fewer than two weeks remaining before the much anticipated Olympic Games open on Friday, 23rd July. Despite no plans at this stage for spectators, athletes are peaking at the right time in events like the Continental Tour Gold and Diamond League Meetings. Sweden's Mondo Duplantis soared over a new pole vault meeting record in Stockholm, South Africa's Akani Simbine achieved a new Africa 100m record in Szekesfehervar, while Kenya's Faith Kipyegon claimed a new national 1500m record in Monaco. Over to rowing and three days ago, an all-female crew of four from Great Britain set a new record for the fastest ocean crossing from San Francisco to Hawaii. The 2,700 mile Great Pacific Race was completed in 35 days, 14 hours and 23 minutes, beating the former record by two full weeks.

As we write, Ashleigh Barty is the new Wimbledon Champion beating Karolina Pliskova 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 5-3. Novak Djokovic is also in the final tomorrow as he aims to complete a Grand Slam year of all four titles. His opponent is Italy's Matteo Berrettini. South Africa's wheelchair tennis star Kgothatso Montjane also made history by reaching the final for the first time. Finally, at the World Orienteering Championships in Doksy, Czech Republic, Sweden's Tove Alexandersson claimed a gold medal in each of the four classes.

We look forward to a very busy seven days. Until next time, have a great week in sport.
