28th February to 6th March
If the last two years have not been incredibly difficult enough, this week we woke up to the news of a full-scale declaration of war and invasion of a sovereign nation within Europe. Take a moment to pause and consider the last part, as it almost appears inconceivable in our modern times. However, it is happening and the outcome will undoubtedly be a terrible loss of life and destruction of property. The consequences will be with us for years to come and this may not be the only war. The preservation of human life is the utmost priority for both nations. As a sports media site, we also take a view on the outcome on sports events that has already suffered a great deal from fractured seasons brought on by the pandemic. The fallout has already begun on Russia with Formula One cancelling the Russian Grand Prix and many other governing bodies will no doubt do the same with their planned events. This is understandable and in many ways a mark of respect to Ukraine's suffering. The question is of course whether a boycott should extend to Russian athletes competing internationally in various sports? Perhaps caution should be taken in this decision as one wonders how much influence any citizen of Russia could have had on their government. The inevitable is most likely a blanket ban, but it will unfortunately create further victims from an atrocious act of war.
Despite all this, we must still reflect on all the positive sports results of the past week. In England, Birmingham staged a round of the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold circuit. Local star Keely Hodgkinson and Sweden's Mondo Duplantis both produced stadium record-breaking performances. Remaining in England and on this occasion Sheffield, the Ukraine's Anton Kazakov claimed the World Snooker Federation Junior Championship title beating England's Jake Croft 5-3. United State's Camille Herron broke her own 100-mile women's world record by winning the USA Track and Field 100-mile Championships in Nevada. The 40-year-old beat her previous time by almost a minute and a half, recording a time of 12 hours 41 minutes 11 seconds. The All Terrain Skate Cross Federation completed the ATSX Ice Cross World Championship at Seiser Alm in Italy. This was the final round with Austrians Marco Dallago and Veronika Windisch winning their races to secure their European Division titles.
The Daytona 500 is one of the major races of the NASCAR Cup Series with the famous raceway in Florida hosting two shorter races in the week leading up to the main event last Sunday. It was eventually Austin Cindric to claim top honours at Daytona Beach. In snooker Hong Kong's Ng On-yee and three-time women's world champion, has begun her participation of the World Snooker Tour for the first time this year at the Welsh Open. Finally and as an inspiration for us all, 93-year-old Val Coleman rowed her way into the world-record books by holding the title in the 90-94 heavyweight women age group over 2,000m, 1,000m and 100m distances.
Until next time, have a great week in sport.
