Helping sport federations grow themselves, their athletes, and their membership

The weekly sports review

16th to 22nd August

The Tokyo Games are almost a distant memory, but the final day on Sunday delivered just as many thrilling moments. Jason Kenny became the first British athlete to win seven Olympic gold medals after a front-riding victory in the men's keirin final. Earlier in the morning, Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge successfully defended his marathon title. The world record holder in the marathon and former 5000m runner, is now regarded as the greatest marathoner of the modern era. The Netherland's Sifan Hassan also claimed her second gold and third medal of the Games after winning the 10,000m. The Games ended with USA topping the medal list followed by China and Japan, with a total of 86 nations winning a medal. A special mention must go to the organisers and the IOC for successfully negotiating difficult times to host a sports event of such a magnitude. Unfortunately for some a positive test did prevent participation, but for the majority of athletes and together with strict protocols in place, all events did proceed. Overall Tokyo 2020 was a great success story.

The British & Irish Lions tour ended last Saturday with South Africa securing a nail-biting decider in Cape Town. The hosts eventually won by 19-16 to take the series 2-1. The incredible story of the tour is that the winning penalty kick, performed by Morne Steyn, was also the same player to perform the winning penalty kick twelve years in 2009, the previous occasion the Lions visited South Africa. A special mention must go to Warren Gatland (the tour head coach), the support staff, and all the players for sticking to the tour when there was every reason to leave the country. South Africa was experiencing a surge in numbers contracting the virus, which also affected many of the players of both teams. Apart from that, there were also very distressing political and criminal issues being witnessed right at the heart of the tour. One can imagine that for the nation it mattered tremendously that the B&I tour management remained committed to complete all the fixtures.

The Rugby Championship started today with New Zealand completing a second win over Australia. It also secured the three-match Bledisloe Cup. South Africa play Argentina today in the other match of the championship. In the Superbike World Championship, Jonathan Rea completed a remarkable 200 podiums in his career after picking up third place at the Autodrome Most last Sunday.

Until next time, have a great week in sport.
