14th to 20th March
After a short break, World Athletics thankfully brought back the popular Race Walking Team Championships held last weekend in very hot conditions at Muscat, Oman. On Sunday it was China's Ma Zhenxia who adjusted to the tough conditions the best to go on and claim top honours in the women's 20km race, which also gave her nation the third individual gold medal of the day. It was China's dominance of the competition that stood out the most, completing the weekend with 13 medals in total (6 gold). Second place was Ecuador with 3 (all gold) and Spain with 6 (1 gold). Medal achievements went to 14 nations, making it a very open event. Tennis fans recently had the Davis Cup to look out for. Apart from two World Group competitions, the main qualifying round had 12 nations go through to the next level. France, Spain, Belgium, USA, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Australia, Kazakhstan, Sweden, Argentina and the Republic of Korea join Croatia, Great Britain and Serbia, with one nation yet to be confirmed. The season opener of the Longines Global Champions Tour took place at the Longines Arena at Al Shaqab in Doha. It was an emotional Ludger Beerbaum and his striking grey mare Mila who beat the most famous horse and rider combination at the moment of Henrik von Eckermann and King Edward.

The Professional Squash Association completed the Optasia Championships in London yesterday, with No.1 seed Ali Farag of Egypt claiming the win. This was men's competition and for the women, the CIB Black Ball Classic begins in Cairo today. Last weekend at a Challenger tournament, Hungary’s Balazs Farkas and South Africa’s Alexandra Fuller were victorious at the Odense Open and means they qualify for the 2021-2022 PSA World Championships. In golf Korea's Ko Jin-young carded -17 to win the HSBC Women's World Championship held in Singapore. Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) in South Africa hosted a 50km road race record attempt and local star Stephen Mokoka did not disappoint. The 37-year-old Mokoka ran a time of 2:42:07. In Tokyo world record-holders Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei recorded another two of the fastest marathons of all time running 2:02:40 and 2:16:02 respectively. Staying with athletics and on this occasion Sweden's Mondis Duplantis set a world pole vault record of 6.19m in Belgrade. In darts world champion Peter Wright became the first Scotsman to reach number one in the Professional Darts Corporation world rankings. The 51-year-old Wright also became the oldest person to achieve the accolade. Finally, the Beijing Paralympic Games complete tomorrow. Yesterday Ollie Hill picked up Great Britain's first Paralympic snowboard medal with bronze in the banked slalom LL2 event.
Until next time, have a great week in sport.
