The Weekly Sports Review

28th March to 3rd April

Today is the start of the Women's Six Nations, the premier rugby union competition for women currently in the world. Since its exception in 2002, France and England have completely dominated, with Ireland the only other nation to win. England to date have twelve titles to their name, followed by five for France and two titles for Ireland. The defending champions are England. The men's tournament completed last Saturday with France becoming the champions after a hard-fought match in Paris. Apart from a closer encounter with Wales in Cardiff, the new holders have been dominant in all their other matches, and currently appear as the form side in the world and potential favourites for the World Rugby Cup in France next year. One of the highlights of the tournament was Italy's last-minute converted try that ended their 36-match losing streak in the Six Nations. The Tricolore of France was again waving wildly when André Negrão, Nicolas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxiviere of the Alpine team won a dramatic opening race for the 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship in Sebring last Saturday.

World Athletics recently hosted the World Indoor Championship in Belgrade. The much anticipated race was the 60m between Italy’s Olympic 100m champion Marcell Jacobs and world 100m champion Christian Coleman of the United States. Jacobs claimed the honours by just three thousandths of a second, clocking a European indoor record of 6.41. Venezuela's world and Olympic triple jump champion Yulimar Rojas raised the mark also in the triple jump by beating her own world indoor and outright records to 15.74m. LeBron James, one of NBA's most famous names, recently achieved the second highest all-time leading score of 36,947 points. Only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the overall record of 38,387. After recently winning the Australian Tennis Open, Ashleigh Barty shocked us all by announcing her retirement from the sport at the age of only 25. Barty dropped the bombshell weeks after becoming the first home-grown champion of the Australian Open in 44 years. Barty has also won Grand Slam crowns on three different surfaces, making her part of a very elite group.

Bangladesh recently made history by winning a one-day International series in South Africa against the hosts for the first time. This has left South Africa in a precarious position of potentially having to qualify for the next Cricket World Cup. In ice hockey we currently have a number of World Championships in various divisions. In the Men's U18 Division II, Group B, held in Sofia, Croatia beat the hosts 5-1. In the Women's Division III, Group B, Serbia beat Israel 6-0 in Belgrade. In the ISU World Figure Skating Championship hosted in Montpellier, USA's Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier claimed the gold medal in the Pairs, while the final result for the Women‘s event has Japan's Kaori Sakamoto claiming the top honours.

Until next time, have a great week in sport.
