Helping sport federations grow themselves, their athletes, and their membership

The weekly sports review

20th to 26th September

Every so often sport surprises us all with the unexpected. At the start of the US Open, few would have predicted that either Great Britain's Emma Raducanu and Canada's Leylah Fernandez would end up in an all-teen women's final. Anticipation was building in the final week as they overcame each obstacle in their march to the grand prize. This is what tennis needed and it captured everyone's attention. Raducanu became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam and the first British woman in 44 years to win a major after beating Fernandez 6-4 6-3 at Flushing Meadows. There is a bright future for both players and a new buzz around women's tennis. Last Sunday, Russia's Daniil Medvedev claimed the men's US Open title and ended Serbia's Novak Djokovic's quest to secure all four Grand Slam titles within the same calendar year. The score was 6-4 6-4 6-4. In a great tournament for Great Britain, Joe Salisbury became the first player to sweep the US Open men's and mixed doubles title since Bob Bryan in 2010.

In other important news, Belgium's Wout van Aert was crowned the Tour of Britain champion right at the end as he sprinted to win the final stage in Aberdeen. Denmark's Kristian Høgenhaug and the Netherland's Sarissa de Vries became the 2021 World Triathlon Long Distance Champions in Almere, the Netherlands. In road running, Kenya's Agnes Tirop took an incredible 28 seconds off the long-standing women-only record for 10km, while Ethiopia's Senbere Teferi set an outright world 5km record of 14.29 at the Road To Records event in Herzogenaurach. Scottish darts fans would have been ecstatic as Peter Wright and John Henderson won it for Scotland at the World Cup of Darts. At the Euro Beach Soccer League Superfinal, Portugal won their third consecutive Superfinal. Russia claimed the inaugural women's Superfinal, with both tournaments played at Figueira da Foz, Portugal. In athletics Burundi's Francine Niyonsaba took more than two seconds off the women's 2000m with a time of 5:21.56 at the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial in Zagreb. At the same event, USA's Marvin Bracy-Williams Jr. came within a mere 0.01 second of Usain Bolt's 100m record.

The World Surf League Champions Tour came to an end in San Clemente, California. Hawaii's Carissa Moore and Brazil's Gabriel Medina are the 2021 champions. In the World Poker Tour Online World Championships, it was Alexandros Theologis of Greece claiming the top prize. Tunisia are the Men's African Volleyball Champions beating hosts Cameroon in the final, with both teams qualifying for the World Championship. Finally, USA's Zion Clark wrote himself into the Guinness Book of World Records setting the the fastest time for going 20m while walking on his hands. His time was an astonishing 4.78 seconds.

Until next time, have a great week in sport.
