On Saturday evening in Auckland, New Zealand's Black Ferns took on the England Roses for the prize of the 2021 Rugby World Cup. England came to the tournament as favourites, but after losing a player to a red card early in the first half, it became a much harder task. The Black Ferns claimed the trophy narrowly winning by 34-31, with the lead changing several times during the match. The credit goes to England for fighting to the end. All was not lost as a day later in Melbourne, England beat Pakistan by 5 wickets with an over to spare to lift the ICC Men's T20 World Cup trophy. In rugby league, England will play France on Friday to determine the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup champion. The women's semi-finals between Australia v Papua New Guinea, and England v New Zealand, will be played today. The final of the Women's Rugby League World Cup is on Saturday, followed by the Men's Rugby League World Cup final. Samoa made history as they beat England in the semi-finals and will play holders Australia in Manchester, England.
In tennis news, last Monday Caroline Garcia (France) beat Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) in the Women's Tennis Association Finals played in Fort Worth, Texas. America's Brandon Nakashima is the ATP Next Gen winner with the final played in Milan on Saturday. Over to the Billie Jean King Cup Final and Switzerland are the new champions after defeating Australia 2-0 in Glasgow.
Santa Susanna in Spain recently hosted the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness World Championship for men and World Cup for women. The men's tournament produced an incredible total of 21 nations winning gold medals, with Iran leading the charge. The team champions are Slovakia. Fourteen nations won gold in the women's event, with Ukraine topping the table.
In field hockey Malaysia beat South Korea 3-2 to lift the Sultan Azian Shah Cup 2022. The Czech Republic won the World Wheelchair-B Curling Championship 2022 after beating Denmark 7-3, with both teams qualifying for the World Wheelchair Curling World Championships 2023 that was recently awarded to Gangwon, South Korea. In open water swimming, Brazil's Ana Marcela Cunha claimed the women's overall title in FINA's Marathon World Series. The men's title was shared between Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri and Hungary's Kristof Rasovszky.
Over to squash where Egypt’s Mostafa Asal and Sana Ibrahim have captured the 2022 FISU World University Championship Squash Championship. Egypt did it again in the Squash Federation of Africa Seniors Championships by beating South Africa 2-1 in both the men's and women's finals. New Zealand's Joelle King and England's Mohamed Elshorsbagy have won the recent Professional Squash Association World Tour tournaments in Tauranga, New Zealand. Neom, Saudi Arabia's newest city, hosted the Neom Beach Soccer Cup 2022. It was Brazil who triumphed 2-1 over neighbours Paraguay.
With only one more race weekend to complete the FIA World Touring Car Cup season, Spain's Mikel Azcona is eyeing the title with a current lead of 60 points over nearest rival Nestor Girolami. A special mention goes to Dutch driver Tom Coronel who finished sixth overall in both races at the Bahrain International Circuit over the weekend. It meant Coronel topped the WTCR Trophy order on each occasion. Sweden Johan Kristoffersson is champion of the FIA World Rallycross Championship after the season ended at the famous Nürburgring on Sunday. The FIA Formula E World Championship has 17 rounds planned for 2023, which includes the streets of Cape Town in February. Alvaro Bautista has become the first Spanish champion since 2011 to claim the FIM Superbike World Championship.
Uzbekistan topped the medal list at the recent ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championship. Staying with boxing where England's Natasha Jonas added the IBF title to her WBC and WBO Middleweight titles. In UFC Alex Pereira defeated Israel Adesanya to become middleweight champion. Over to sambo where athletes competing under the banner of the governing body Fédération Internationale de Sambo, topped the medal table at the recent World Sambo Championships.
Brazil's Mikaili Sol and Italy's Gianmaria Coccoluto are the 2022 Global Kitesports Association Freestyle World Champions after a weekend in Taiba, Brazil. Turkey's Tayfun Tasdemir beat Spain's Ruben Legazpi in a one-sided final to claim the 2022 UMB Carom Billiards 3-cushion world title.
Union Cycliste Internationale, the world governing body for cycling, opened a new track cycling world tour over the weekend with the first round of the UCI Track Champions League. Abu Dhabi hosted the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships. Japan's Moto Sasaki and France's Aude Cassagne claimed the men's and women's Elite Flatland, while the men's and women's Elite Park titles went to Japan's Rimu Nakamura and USA's Hannah Roberts.
Australia extended their lead to nine points after winning the Sail Grand Prix Dubai SGP over the weekend. After ending Day 1 in eighth place, Tom Slingsby's team made a stunning comeback in Day 2 to claim first place. Sweden have beaten the Czech Republic by 9-3 to win the Men's World Floorball Championships 2022 hosted in Zurich and Winterthur. Finland claim third place. Cuba have been crowned the first-ever WBSC Baseball5 World Champions, an exciting new development of the game. Japan’s Ayako Rokkaku and Cuba's Briandy Molina picked up the women's and men's MVP awards.
Sandra Dodet of France and David Castro Fajardo of Spain won gold at the World Triathlon World Cup hosted at Vina del Mar in Chile. Zambia scored a golden goal to claim the final against Zimbabwe in the IKF Africa Korfball Championships South. Italy are the champions of the Women's World Championships Long Casting of Sea Weights hosted in Asunción over the previous week. Finally, we are ready for the start of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar with the first match on Sunday between the hosts and Ecuador.
