9th to 15th May
The Women's Rugby World Cup will be held in New Zealand from October this year and even though there is home advantage, one wonders who will be able to stop the formidable run of England. Last Saturday in France, the Women's Six Nations title was claimed with a strong 24-12 win against the hosts. England Women have now won four consecutive titles and are strong favourites to also capture the biggest prize in Rugby Union later this year. Last week we had a number of Curling Championships complete. Geneva hosted the World Senior Championships with the hosts claiming the women's gold medal, while Canada took the men's title. At the same venue, the World Mixed Doubles Championships took place with Scotland's Eve Muirhead and Bobby Lammie beating the hosts Alina Paetz and Sven Michel. Kaunas in Lithuania hosted the European Championships C-Division with Belgium women and Ireland men claiming gold. The inaugural World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles was hosted in Lohja, Finland, and here Sweden's Sabina Johansson and Marcus Holm won top honours.
The Ice Hockey World Championship season also continued last week. The French women returned to winning ways in Angers by claiming Division I, Group A. Sweden stunned the USA by winning the Men's U18 title 6-4 in Landshut, Germany. In the Men's U18 Division I, Group B played in Asiago, it was Hungary who came out on top. Finally for ice hockey, Poland beat Japan in the Men's Division I, Group B held in Tychy. In athletics news, two-time world indoor champion Yomif Kejelcha won the men’s 5km in 12:53, the fastest debut in history. Kejelcha was the standout performer at the Adizero Road to Records event in Herzogenaurach. USA's Erriyon Knighton became the fourth-fastest man over 200m with a time of 19.49 seconds at the LSU Invitational. At the European Squash Federation European Team Championships in Eindhoven, England claimed both the men's and women's titles.
In boxing news and undoubtedly one of the biggest for women, Ireland's Katie Taylor retained her lightweight title against Amanda Serrano in Madison Square Gardens. USA's Shakur Stevenson dominated Oscar Valdez to become the unified super-featherweight champion. Stevenson has now extended his unbeaten record to 18-0. Serbia, Italy and Spain have qualified for the FINA Men's Polo World Super League Final to be played in France in July. Australia's Jack Robinson and Isabella Nicholls claimed the Margaret River Pro, part of the World Surf League Championship Tour. Brazil's Filipe Toledo and Costa Rica's Brisa Hennessy still lead the overall rankings. Players from 40 nations took part in the FIDE Chess World Cadets & Youth Championships 2022 for Rapid and Blitz. Ukraine won the most medals with 14 (6 gold), followed by Poland with 11 (2 gold), and Turkey with 7 (3 gold).
Australia's women have claimed the World Rugby Women Sevens Series title in Langford, Canada. With one more round to go in Toulouse, they have an unassailable lead on the table. In snooker Ronnie O’Sullivan underlined his status as snooker’s greatest ever player by beating Judd Trump 18-13 in the World Championship final at The Crucible in Sheffield. This was his seventh title. Finally, South African born Jacky Hunt-Broersma (46) will enter the Guinness Book of Records with the most consecutive marathons of 104. What makes this record even more significant is that Hunt-Broersma lost her leg to cancer and only took up running after that.
Until next time, have a great week in sport.
