Helping non-Olympic and growing sport federations establish a global presence, increase athlete participation, and build their membership

The weekly sports review

12th to 18th April

Welcome back as many parts of Europe had a strong cold spell in the early parts of last week, but even so one can clearly see evidence of Spring appearing. That of course means new seasons begin for some sports and May is especially a month where winter calendars are officially behind us and we can look forward to the summer approaching. One such inaugural championship began in the Wadi Rum in Saudi Arabia over the previous weekend with the Desert X-Prix. Exteme E has teams with a female and male driver that is essentially electric off-road racing. There are five races on five continents and one of the themes of the championship is to bring global awareness to environmental concerns (Desert, Ocean, Arctic, Amazon and Glacier). Formula One stars like Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg have all invested in teams. The championship had a great opening weekend and looks to have a strong future.

The World Men's Curling Championship in Calgary is approaching the semi-finals today and after the completion of all the round-robin matches, defending champions Sweden tops the table. The championship also doubled as a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games. It is a busy period for Curling as Lohja in Finland begins the World Wheelchair-B Championships today, which will shortly be followed by the World Women's Curling Championships back at Calgary. In Fencing the FIE Junior and Cadet World Championships conclude tomorrow and this also includes the first Golf Major of the season. The Masters at the famous Augusta National Golf Club currently has England's Justin Rose in the lead. In Tennis a major ATP-tournament begins tomorrow in Monaco. The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters features until next Sunday. We have more Women's Six Nations matches with France and England as the favourites for the title.

Looking much further ahead, major events to make note of that were postponed from 2020 are the UEFA Euro 2020 starting on the 11th June, the Olympic Games from the 23rd July, and the Paralympic Games from the 24th August. Until next time, have a great week in sport!
