Helping non-Olympic and growing sport federations establish a global presence, increase athlete participation, and build their membership

The weekly sports review

19th to 25th April

Hello and welcome to another sports review and we note today that Japan has been coming under criticism for their apparent lack of containing the spread of the virus. This is of course aimed at the Olympic Games scheduled to start on the 23rd July in Tokyo. There is even mention by health officials that it should be moved to another nation to host. Organisers of the event made an earlier announcement this year that no foreign travelers would be allowed to attend the prestigious event. For those voicing their opinion about Japan's ability to host the Games, we wonder whether if it was expected that the virus should now have been wiped out by now in the nation. We also wonder what the state of containment is within the home nations of those officials expressing their concern at Japan. The fact is that organisers may have to allow fewer spectators to attend than previously hoped for and even potentially have events behind closed doors, but the Olympic Games must go ahead in Tokyo. Sport is still adjusting to the ever-changing conditions and Japan will be no exception. Athletes have been training very hard and presently there are several qualification tournaments taking place, so it is important to remain committed to the nation hosting an excellent Games.

Over the next week we have world events in no fewer than 34 sports. There are two main titles postponed from last year. In chess The Candidates Tournament was brought to an abrupt halt in Russia last year when the government ordered the borders to be shut. In draughts the women's world title match between Russia's Tamara Tansykkuzhina (holder) and Poland's Natalia Sadowska (challenger) will be played in Warsaw. The Boxing Youth World Championship draws to a close next Saturday, including the Women's Six Nations championship. We end the review with a special tribute to Sweden's Men's Curling Team for winning the world championship in Calgary for the third consecutive year. Scotland won silver, with Switzerland winning bronze.

Until next time, have a great week in sport!
