The weekly sports review

26th April to 2nd May

Simon Yates won the Tour of the Alps that completed yesterday in Austria. It was perfect preparation for one of the big UCI WorldTour events to start very soon. Before the Giro d'Italia begins on the 8th May, we first head to Switzerland to complete the Tour de Romandie. The victory for Yates has also placed him as one of the favourites for Italy. This weekend brings a close to the Women's Six Nations with the big match between England and France to determine the champions. Today is also the last day of the AIBA Youth Men's and Women's World Championships in Poland, including a big athletics event in Eugene, Oregon. This forms part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold and serves as a further early-season meeting as we edge closer to the Olympic Games. Yesterday will have marked three months before the opening session.

Staying with athletics and next week in Silesia, Poland, we have the World Athletics Relays. The international meeting is a biennial track and field event and some of the relay races do not form part of the standard Olympic program. Moving over to equestrian sports and next weekend sees Newmarket hosting the 2000 and 1000 Guineas, while over in Kentucky there are a number of big races at Churchill Downs. One of these involve the Kentucky Derby. Singapore hosts the Women's World Championships in golf with Sung Hyun Park from South Korea as the defending champion. In sailing the long World Match Racing season starts next weekend in Poland. There are also European Championships in Badminton and Gymnastics.

Until next time, have a great week in sport.
