The Triple Crown of Motorsport

This weekend we have the privilege of witnessing two of motorsport's biggest races of the season crown their champions. For any driver and team, winning the overall championship is the clear goal. Within each season there are special events and Sunday we get to see Formula One's Monaco Grand Prix and INDYCAR's Indy 500. Known as the unofficial Triple Crown of motorsport, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, to be staged in the second weekend of June, completes the trio. Often drivers have competed in two of the three championships, but current contractual agreements may make it difficult to be involved in all of them. In the history of motorsport, nineteen drivers have competed in each leg of the Triple Crown and Great Britain's Graham Hill is the only driver to have won all three.

The International Boxing Association hosted the Women's World Boxing Championship in Turkey. The host nation achieved five gold medals, with Ireland claiming two, and five other nations winning a gold medal each. In the Global Champions Tour, equestrian's biggest showjumping world tour event, the lead in the overall standings has been taken by Belgium's Pieter Devos. This weekend the tour is in Hamburg, followed by the glitzy Cannes on 2-4 June. Great Britain's Jamie Chadwick has won her second race in a row at Barcelona in the W Series. The defending champion has strengthened her position at the top of the standings. In Donegal in Ireland, USA's Olivia Amber and Ireland's Ruairi Long set course records against a record field in the Seven Sisters Skyline 30K race, the third event in the World Mountain Running Association season.

Scotland, one of the strongest nations in curling, has again claimed a major victory. Their junior men beat Germany to claim the World Junior gold medal in Jönköping, Sweden. Finland's Kalle Rovanperä claimed his third win of the FIA World Rally Championship and now leads the overall standings by a 46-point margin. In the same way Scotland is so successful in curling, Egypt dominates squash. It was no surprise that the Professional Squash Association World Championship was won by Nour El Sherbini and Ali Farag. In the second golf Major of the year, USA's Justin Thomas also secured his second Major title of his career at the PGA Championship. Top seeds and defending champions Karen Hird & Charlotta Cooley produced a dominant performance to win their tenth successive Eton Fives final in the Ladies Championships at Eton College in England.

The International Federation of Match Poker hosted the postponed Nations Cup in North Macedonia during the week. Germany claimed the top podium position, with Israel a surprise second just ahead of Kazakhstan in third. The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne is testing an obstacle course racing discipline in Ankara that could form part of future World Cup events. This week we also had a number of incredible records. Nazaré in Portugal is known for its large waves. Germany's Sebastian Steudtner has set a world record for the largest wave surfed for his ride measuring 26.21 meters (86ft). The Netherland's Ellen van Dijk set the Women's Hour Record in Grenchen by cycling a distance of 49.254km. Finally, Selma Ramberg of Norway set a Bench Press Classic record of 113.5kg in the 52kg class.

Until next time, have a great week in sport.
