Helping non-Olympic and growing sport federations establish a global presence, increase athlete participation, and build their membership

The weekly sports review

3rd to 9th May

For netball fans news came in earlier this week that Australia has been awarded the rights to host the 2027 World Cup in Sydney. This will be the seventeenth occasion of the prestigious event. Before then, the sixteenth event will be hosted in Cape Town, which also marks the first time Africa gets to host the Netball World Cup. Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi won the FIDE Candidates Tournament recently held in Yekaterinburg. The important event was cut short in March last year and had to be concluded, as the winner gets to challenge Norway's Magnus Carlsen in a World Championship title match. Moving over the rugby union and so far all indications are that the British & Irish Lions Tour will go ahead. Changes have been made so that all matches will be played in Cape Town and Johannesburg. At this point it is uncertain whether local supporters will be permitted to watch games live, but the directive for the travelling fans from the British Isles is that no travel to South Africa will be allowed. One does feel many fans will find a way around that.

In Formula One, Turkey has replaced Canada for the 2021 season, but Canada will be back in 2022. Montréal extended their contract securing races in the city until 2031. The Snooker World Championship has reached the semi-final stage to be played today. Mark Selby faces Stuart Bingham in the afternoon and Kyren Wilson takes on Shaun Murphy in the evening. The final is to be concluded on Monday. In draughts Warsaw is currently hosting a Women's World Championship Title Match. The holder Tamara Tansykkuzhina from Russia, is being challenged by Natalia Sadowksa from Poland. There are still three rounds remaining and the challenger is leading 39-33. Leading up to the Olympic Games in Tokyo, the city is currently hosting a FINA Diving World Cup and next weekend will feature a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event. Today is also the last race of the 2021 FIM Supercross World Championship with Salt Lake City the fitting venue to bring the season to a close.

Until next time, have a great week in sport.
