Helping sport federations grow themselves, their athletes, and their membership

The weekly sports review

10th to 16th May

Last Monday Russia's Tamara Tansykkuzhina confirmed her status as champion by defending the Women's World Draughts Championship Title Match 2021 in Warsaw. Her challenger was local hero Natalia Sadowksa, who led for most of the tournament. The final day ended with 54 points each, resulting in five tie-breaks before a breakthrough came. Mark Selby also became a world champion on Monday by taking top honours at the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield, England. Selby has now won 19 ranking titles and has held the number one position six times. The victory also places him eighth on the all-time list of ranking tournament wins. Moving over to the FIM Supercross World Championship, the final round completed in Salt Lake City last Saturday. Cooper Webb is the 450SX World Champion, while Colt Nichols and Justin Cooper are the World Champions in the 250SX East and 250SX West classes. A final look at results takes us to ice hockey where Frisco and Plano in Texas hosted the Ice Hockey Men's U18 World Championship. Canada became the new champions, consigning Russia to the silver medal. This is the second consecutive tournament that Russia lost out to the gold medal. Sweden, the winner in 2019, took up the bronze medal.

The British & Irish Lions touring squad was announced on Thursday. Perhaps more so than usual, the selectors have raised a few eyebrows with the omission of some star players. The first match starts on the 3rd July in Johannesburg and we feel many of the players left out of the squad will feature nearer to the latter stages of the tour. It may be clever player management by Warren Gatland, the head coach. Gatland has been head coach in 2013 to Australia and in 2017 to New Zealand. Over to the UCI WorldTour and one of the big events on the calendar; the Giro d'Italia began yesterday in Italy with the final day on the 30th May. It is the second biggest race and leads up to the Tour de France, starting on the 26th June. Various sports are currently going through a series of Olympic Games Qualification events, as the opening night of the 23rd July is only 11 weeks away. Before that we have the postponed UEFA Euro 2020 starting in a month on Tuesday. Finally, Calgary is currently hosting the World Women's Curling Championship. The round-robin matches are nearly completed before the knockout stages begin. The final will be played on Sunday.

Until next time, have a great week in sport.
