On Sunday Rafael Nadal fought his way past Novak Djokovic to record his 10th Rome crown at the Internazionale BNL d'Italia. The victory also brought his titles to a record-equalling 36 ATP Masters. If there were any question marks over Nadal's desire and ability to win at Roland Garros starting next Sunday, then his last win should put those doubts to bed. The French Open is the second Tennis Grand Slam of the year. Last weekend was also the UIPM Modern Pentathlon World Cup Final at Székesfehérvár in Hungary. Germany saved the best until last to win the Mixed Relay, while Russia won the swimming event. Fencing was won by the favourites Belarus, while the showjumping event went to Poland. In the Giro d'Italia we approach the final week with Colombia's Egan Arley Bernal Gomez the current holder of the Maglia Rosa. Today is stage 14 with a distance of 205 km.
Tomorrow is the final of the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship currently being contested in Aberdeen. Sweden will play Norway in one semi-final, while Scotland await the winners of Canada and Switzerland. Last Monday was the opening day of the 105th Running of the Indianapolis 500. The event is regarded as the greatest spectacle in racing with the actual race only next Sunday. It also forms part of the Triple Crown of Motorsport, with the other two events Le Mans 24 Hours and Formula One's Monaco Grand Prix. It so happens that this weekend Formula One is at the famous Monte-Carlo street circuit. Friday was also the start of the biggest event in ice hockey. Riga are the hosts of the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and they opened in style by beating Canada 2-0. Finland are the current holders as the event was not held last year. They also look for a repeat as they beat USA 2-1 in their opening match.
The Andalucía Bike Race currently taking place over the weekend, is the opener of the 2021 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon Series. If all goes according to plan, the season closes with the Cape Epic, a famous mountain bike race every year in South Africa in October. Further rugby union news is that the dates for the Rugby Championship has been confirmed. South Africa, the current world champions, last played an international in the World Cup final in 2019. They will now play 14 tests in 5 months to complete the season.
