Italy top medals table at ISSF Shotgun World Cup

This week in review

15th to 21st July

Before we look ahead at what is in stall for us this week, we can review some of the key results we could not report on the previous Sunday. In women's football the USA has again established their number one ranking by beating The Netherlands in the FIFA Women's World Cup final. They successfully defended their title and may look to dominate the sport for many years to come, but there are signs that other nations are starting to improve a great deal. Qualifying for the UEFA Women's Euro Championship starts on the 29th August with England as the host nation in 2021. It is perhaps from one of these nations the greatest challenge could come in 2023 to claim the title from the USA. In further football news Brazil secured the Copa America 2019 title, while Mexico won the Gold Cup 2019. At the Africa Cup of Nations we are down to the last four with Senegal playing Tunisia and Algeria playing Nigeria to determine the finalists for next Friday.

Simona Haleb of Romania has won the Wimbledon ladies singles title defeating Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday. This has also ensured the first ever Wimbledon singles title for Romania. Later today Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will contest the men's title. The next and final Grand Slam tournament for the season is the US Open starting the 26th August. London is currently experiencing some rain showers and it will remain to be seen whether the ICC Cricket World Final will be played today at Lord's. England are favourites, but New Zealand are confident enough to make it their maiden title. In Gwangju in South Korea the 18th FINA World Championships still have two amazing weeks left of titles to be won in various aquatic disciplines. In the Tour de France we have stage 9 today and after the completion of stage 8 Thomas de Gendt of Team Soudal is the current owner of the Yellow Jersey. The final day is on the 28th July. The Royal Portrush Golf Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland will showcase the 148th Open Championship starting on Thursday. The Open Championship or also referred to as The Open is one of the golf majors in the season.

The Vitality Netball World Cup at Liverpool in England features the final group matches today. There are four groups of four teams with the knock-out stages to be played during the week to determine the semi-finalists. The final is on Sunday. In rugby union the Rugby Championship starts on Saturday. This year and as a result of the World Rugby World Cup in Japan in September, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa will only play each other once. One of the major competitions on the BWA Badminton World Tour will be hosted by Jakarta starting on Tuesday. We have another IAAF Diamond League Meeting this week and on this occasion the Olympic Stadium in London will showcase the best athletes on Saturday and Sunday. Staying in England where Blackpool will host the Betfred Darts Matchplay starting on Saturday, while Nottingham will host the WCF U21 Golf Croquet World Championship also from the same day. Budapest will host the FIE World Fencing Championships starting on Monday and from Friday Bangkok stages the Muaythai Senior World Championships.
