Italy top medals table at ISSF Shotgun World Cup

This week in review

5th to 11th August

In Lima the 18th Pan American Games enters into the final week and already the USA completely dominates the medals table. They are currently on top with 47 gold medals with their nearest rival Mexico on 19. This week the schedule includes Basque Pelota, Archery, Athletics, Basketball, Cycling, Golf, Judo and Karate. We then head over to the island of Roatán, the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras, for the 4th CMAS Freediving Outdoors World Championship starting on Tuesday. The island is best known for deep underwater cliffs only a few swim strokes away from the beaches. The Bay Islands are situated in the Caribbean. The emphasis this week is also on Youth Sports with the world governing bodies for Wrestling and Taekwondo hosting Cadet World Championships. In addition, there are U19 and Youth World Championships in Goalball, Lacrosse, Rowing, Roller Skiing, Softball and Squash. Today is also the final of the U12 Baseball World Cup with Chinese Taipei or Taiwan playing Japan for the title. Chinese Taipei have already won the U12 Softball World Cup that concluded earlier in the week.

The Ashes is considered to be the biggest competition in cricket between two nations. The name originated from the 1882 series between England and Australia where the touring side beat the hosts at The Oval. An article in the Sporting Times claimed that English cricket had died and that ''the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia''. The Ashes urn, made of terracotta and only about 15cm tall, supposedly contains the ashes of a burnt cricket ball. After the loss in 1882, Ivo Bligh, the captain of the England side, vowed to regain the Ashes in the series just a year later in Australia. The name remained ever since. The test series is now five in total and the holder of the Ashes retains the trophy should there be an overall draw. It has always been considered a big advantage to win the first test and England currently have the advantage as we approach day four. Steve Smith, the former captain of Australia, appears to be the key figure standing in the way of any English victory in Birmingham.

That concludes the review for this week. Until next time, have a great sporting week!
