Egypt first non-European team to win U19 Handball world title

This week in review

15th to 21st April

Today is the start of one of the highlights on the ATP Tour. The Monte-Carlo Masters runs until the final on Sunday and it also heralds the start of a series of clay court tournaments that lead to the next Grand Slam on the calendar. The French Open is only at the end of May, but all these next tennis competitions will provide ample preparation for the big event. Rafael Nadal, the undisputed clay court king, has won the Monte-Carlo Masters for the last three years and will no doubt be building on his form over the next six weeks. In ladies' tennis we take a short break in tournaments, but the Fed Cup returns this weekend with the semi-finals. France play Romania in Rouen, while Australia play Belarus in Brisbane.

The world of chess brings two world championships this week. The Greek island Rhodes stages the FIDE World Senior Team Championships in age groups 50+ and 65+ from Monday. Two days later, Antalya in Turkey stages the FIDE World School Individual Championships. Antalya is a favourite sporting destination for many sports each year. Tuesday is the last day for the ISSF World Cup Shotgun currently being held in Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, but on Sunday a new ISSF World Cup for Rifle and Pistol starts up in Beijing. World Skate presents three world cup competitions this week. Montreux hosts rink hockey, Orlando hosts indoor and outdoor inline roller skating, while Hiroshima hosts freestyle roller skating.

More premier tournaments to look forward include the U18 Ice Hockey World Championship to be held in Örnsköldsvik in Sweden. Staying indoors and in Skandinavia, the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship will be welcomed by Stavanger in Norway. Hiroshima hosts a second major event with the UCI BMX Freestyle Park and Flatland World Cup over the weekend. Over to korfball and also another junior competition with the IKF U19 World Korfball Championship in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. The ultimate event on the table tennis 2019 calendar is the World Table Tennis Championship to be held in Budapest starting on Sunday. Air Sports bring the 3rd FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championships in Lille, while another ultimate event for World Snooker is the World Championship in Sheffield from Saturday until the 6th May. This will also conclude the snooker season for a few months. In addition to the sports already mentioned, there are a number of World Tour events listed for you.

We'll be back again next week with a another preview of all the premier international sport tournaments to look forward to.
