In the northwestern Romanian region lies the municipality of Baia Mare, situated along the Săsar River. Future stars of orienteering convened for the International Orienteering Federation Junior World Orienteering Championship 2023 that began last Sunday. We reported on many of the results in the Weekday Report published on Friday, and we follow up with the final event contested by 54 men’s teams and 43 women’s teams that closed off a very successful competition. Hungary's Boglarka Czako, Viktoria Mag, and Rita Maramarosi secured the Women's Relay, while Czechia's Daniel Bolehovsky, Jiri Donda, and Jakub Chaloupsky won the Men's gold. 

After Stage 9, Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard is the current holder of the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France, the UCI WorldTour's most prestigious road race. Belgium's Jasper Philipsen leads the Points, while the best Climber is USA's Neil Powless. The Netherland's star cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten, lead a strong field to claim the Giro d'Italia Donne, a UCI Women's WorldTour race. 

At a rain-affected Headingley in Leeds, England have kept their Ashes hopes alive by winning the third test today. Still facing an uphill task, it does mean interest in the series will remain at its peak. Now trailing by 2-1, England must win both the remaining test matches to claim the trophy from the holders. The teams move next to Old Trafford in Manchester for the fourth test from the 19th July. 

Ukraine's Viktoriya Motrichk and the Netherland's Jan Groenendijk are the champions of the Riga Open Draughts World Cup. Over to military sports where South Korea has emerged as the champions of the 14th World Military Championship Women's Football. In regional football news, England have beaten Spain in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. The Rugby Championship kicked off yesterday with the first of three rounds. Both South Africa and New Zealand thumped their opposition and will now face off in Auckland next Saturday for a match that is most certainly the championship decider. The final round is on the 29th July. France and Ireland will contest the final of the World Rugby U20 Championship next Friday at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa.

Formula One's defending champion Max Verstappen, has stamped his authority on the current season even further by securing victory in the British Grand Prix 2023 at the Silverstone Circuit. Verstappen now moves 99 points clear of Sergio Perez in second place. Sweden's Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky and Johan Kristoffersson secured the first and second races of the Island X Prix in Sardinia, Rounds 5 and 6 of Extreme E. William Byron took his fourth victory of the season at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series.

Jared Mees claimed his seventh win in the 2023 Progressive American Flat Track at the Orange Country Half-Mile. Mees now leads the standings by two points. Australia's Jett Lawrence and USA's Haiden Deegan currently lead the standings of the Pro Motocross Championship in the 450 and 250 Class respectively. 

At the Ultimate Fighting Championship 290 in Las Vegas, Alexander Volkanovski stopped Yair Rodriguez to retain his featherweight title. Dricus du Plessis also knocked out Robert Whittaker that sets him up to take on Israel Adesanya, the current middleweight belt-holder. 

Over to sailing news, Italy's Mattia Cesana and Emma Mattivi have secured the Youth Men and Women gold in the 2023 ILCA 6 Youth & Men World Championships. New Zealand's George Lane is the men's champion. Auronzo in Italy hosted the 2023 ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships. Hungary secured an incredible 25 gold medals, topping the table on 44 in total. Their nearest rival was Germany with a total of 22. World Rowing completed the 2023 World Cup III over the weekend at Lucerne, Switzerland.

Indonesia's Adi Mulyono Rahmad and Sallsabillah Rajiahboth delighted the crowd with their first ever International Federation Sport Climbing World Cup speed gold medals in Chamonix, France. South Korea’s Kim Jain claimed her 30th World Cup gold medal and Great Britain’s Toby Roberts claimed his first in the Lead discipline. At the Professional Windsurfers Association 2023 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing Grand Slam, Slalom titles go to Spain's Blanca Alabau and Croatia's Enrico Marotti. The Wave champions are Spain's Daido Ruano Moreno and Brazil's Marcilio Browne. 

Bulgaria are the Group All-Around and Team champions of the FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics Junior World Championships 2023. The Hoop gold has been secured by Israel's Alona Tal Franco, while Bulgaria's Elvira Krasnobaeva is the Individual Ball champion. Israel also claimed victory in the Group 5 Ropes. Poland's Liliana Lewinska won the Individual Clubs and Individual Ribbon finals.

Ari Sánchez and Paula Josemaría Martín are the champions in the World Padel Tour València Open. The men's winners are Franco Stupaczuk and Martin Di Nenno. Slovenia have beaten France 63-61 to take victory in the FIBA U18 Women's European Basketball Championship. The B Competition was won by Croatia.

Impressive times were achieved in a number of athletics meetings. Shericka Jackson ran 10.65 in the 100m at the Jamaican National Championships, the fifth fastest woman in history. USA's Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone stormed to the 400m national title, becoming the second fastest US woman ever over 400m, and the 10th fastest of all time. At the same meeting in Oregon, Gabby Thomas ran the sixth fastest time in history as she won the women's 200m.
